Summer is an especially fun time to visit AuGres. Swimmers head to the beaches on Lake Huron, and the AuGres River and Saginaw Bay are major destinations for anglers hooked on some of the Midwest's best perch and walleye. The river and bay are perfect for canoeing, kayaking and tubing. Sailboats and power boats are welcomed at AuGres State Dock, a state Harbor of Refuge, and at five private marinas. Boats of all types tie up at cottages and dock condominiums from the mouth of the river inland, and at the DNR public launch site.
The AuGres Riverfront Park & Campground features 119 campsites with full hook-ups, and a picnic area, boat launch, baseball diamonds, playground, horseshoe pit, shuffleboard and lighted tennis and basketball courts. A wooden pedestrian bridge over the river links the park with downtown. Campers also find a range of services at the 350-site Sleepy Oaks Campground.
Winter is another season to have fun in AuGres. The river and bay offer skating and ice fishing. Nearby are trails for snowmobiling, snoeshoeing and cross-country sking.
AuGres' "shoulder seasons" also offer recreational opportunities, from spring smelt fishing to fall foilage tours.
History buffs will want to visit the Arenac County Historical Museum. Just across the street from the museum ia a historic German church. Recently moved to the site, the historic landmark will be open for tours, weddings and other special occasions.
